This article is a brief description for anyone that is about to start or has started a website, and is struggling with what to do next, or is lost in the world of search engines looking for best options.
Let’s get started with the basics of creating a website and let’s see if I can take you quickly to where you want to go in just one article, without expanding too much on details.
Pick and register a domain name for your website
A popular domain marketplace to use is godaddy.com, but I prefer namecheap.com domains since they cost less. You may want to start saving money ASAP.
Try to buy a .com domain unless the other domain extensions better serve your purpose.
After trying many web hosting companies, I have decided that Siteground for $3.95/month has the best web hosting service for WordPress (see below). It has amazing customer service (very important for beginners), easy to install WordPress, better integration, and is hands down the best in every other way. But if you’re looking for cheaper hosting that is still reliable, then try Hostgator for $2.75/month which was my absolutely favorite 10 years ago, but now they’re not as great with customer service. Hostgator is still in the top 3 hosting services for WordPress. Another great web hosting service for WordPress is the WP Engine, bit pricey but it’s users love it it. If you would like to try it, you can get our 20% Off WP Engine any plan using code#wpe20off
WordPress is a free tool that can be installed and used to build a website without having any knowledge of programming or coding.
Installing WordPress is almost as easy as installing an app on your smartphone. Go to your hosting account and find the option to “Install WordPress”. Create a WordPress Login by entering a username and password. (This will be used for logging into WordPress)
After the WordPress Installation is complete, you’ll then be taken to your WordPress Dashboard. This is the back-end from where you’ll be managing your website. When you reach this page, your site will be LIVE! So, you can quickly view it, by simply entering your domain name.
Your website now has a default WordPress Theme. You can change the Theme. I will show you how to do this in the next steps.
You can use any of the free Themes that come included with every WordPress installation. To do this, go to WordPress “Dashboard”, “Appearance”, “Themes” and select the Theme you like, or you can choose a WordPress theme that best works with your niche and website purpose with tons of custom features from template monster. Purchase the Theme you like, access the Theme files given to you from template monster and upload the .zip folder to your WordPress installation.
Customize the Images and Text
This depends on the Theme you selected, so any type of step by step guidance can create confusion rather than clarity. Directing you to look for buttons that might not be in your installation due to the Theme you chose is not helpful. Just stay curious and persistent and keep exploring the dashboard menu.
To create a new page, just go to “Pages”, “Add New” and start typing your content. You can also add images from your media gallery. After you’re done editing, you can see a preview of the page or just hit the publish button to see the page live. Come back to edit if you’re not happy with how it looks on the front end. Normally all footer menu links go to pages that can be edited.
Creating a new post
To add new post just go to “All Posts, “Add New” and follow the same procedure used when adding a new page.
Logo, home page images, menus and widgets can all be edited in the “Appearance” menu. And you can use the live preview from this section to see the changes immediately as you make them and before publishing.
Based on your need you will install WordPress plugins. This is also easy. First do some research in a google search bar using the keywords that best describe what you need the plugin to do for you and sure enough someone already thought of making the perfect plugin for your need. Now that you know the plugin name, go to your WordPress dashboard “Plugins”, “Add New” and search for that plugin name in the search bar. Most plugins are free, some are partially free and some costly, so make sure you visit the plugin page for more information before installing.
When ready, click “Install” then “Activate” and the plugin is added to your WordPress dashboard. Setup the new plugin and that’s it.
Coming soon… is a list of the top most popular plugins for WordPress.
Now that you’ve installed the WordPress and have created important pages like “About Us”, “Contact”, etc. and have started posting, if you haven’t already, you will need to create social media accounts and connect those accounts to your website. This setup depends on the theme you have chosen, but most of the time, this section is found easily, as it is made obvious by the theme designer.
Checking Website Performance
Now you need to take some control over your website performance. The best way to do this, is to check data through google analytics.
Just create an account at the Google Analytics page and the Google Search Console page, and submit your website URL. Verify the ownership of your website and give it a few days for google to start pulling data for your webpages.
If the website you are creating is just for people you know, like friends and family, or a small community, then that’s it. You did it. Congratulations!
Search Engine Optimization – SEO
If you are making a website for services, products etc., and would like to reach for a bigger audience, then you will need more optimization for the search engines like Google and Bing to find and rank your website.
This is a large topic for this article, but I will tell you briefly the tools I use to optimize my websites for SEO.
- SEO Tools
If you haven’t already tried them, you can now since all three are unique in their own approach to SEO and even let you check your website daily for free, just it’s a limited version.
I use Mac computers. The best program for SEO for Mac is SEO
Power Suite. The program shows you what is missing from the search engine’s point of view so you can rank better. You can really do amazing optimization with this program, and the price you pay for it is less than what inexpensive SEO companies charge for one month of SEO. The program teaches you step by step what to do with each page so you can gain control, not only of your website performance, but also of your website ranking for the top keywords in your niche. This is a big deal for anyone that likes to rank higher in search engines for their keywords. Other SEO tools you can use are SEMRush and Ahrefs.com, etc.
Monetizing Your Website
Now if you like to further monetize your website, and also make it look cooler, with some image, slides, and banners, then you might want to look into affiliate marketing. This works perfect for bloggers, since they can make blog posts around products they like, and at the same time, they can earn revenue from the advertisers for promoting their products. Some bloggers make millions of dollars doing just this. Serious “side money” can be made for passionate people that have ideas and like to share them with the world.
Also a great way to start making money immediately without having to do anything, just purchase the hosting and upload the site files to your hosing account and this company will do free Websites for you, so you can start making money for yourself using their original content and you get full control over your website since it is in your hosting account running your own promotions as well. Watch the video below for more info.
- Affiliate Marketing Platforms
Some popular affiliate marketing platforms are Shareasale, Rakuten Marketing and Commission Junction for mostly physical products, and for digital products, you might want to use Clickbank. They will get you covered with advertisers and products for any niche with hundreds of thousands of products and the world’s most popular brands. I would suggest to start with one of them since it can become confusing. I have personally seen better commissions at Shareasale and that’s what I would recommend to start with.
Start an E-commerce Store
Those days are gone when you could dream big by selling to your neighbors. Now more than 70% of merchandise is being sold online. If have your own products, that’s great, and you can start selling immediately after your WordPress store template is setup. If you don’t have your own products to sell, then drop-shipping is the way to go.
In a future post, I will write about integrating WordPress with Dropshipping distribution company. But if you want to give it a try yourself, you can start immediately with 2.5 million products that are ready to sell and ship. All you have to do is just ask merchants to let you sell their products in your website using this Dropshipping directory platform.
Let The Experts Do It For You
Now if this still sounds difficult for you to do, then I would recommend using a digital service platform offering freelance services, which is what most digital experts use to complete projects of their own or when doing work for clients. This platform can save you a great deal of time, money, and headaches since all you have to do is search for services, expand your ideas on what you can do with your budget, or change your budget based on the potential your website has.
I would recommend Fiverr to start with, since Fiverr is a very user friendly platform, and your satisfaction has a money back guarantee. Fiverr initially started as a fixed $5 per service, this way you were able to get a professional logo done for just $5. But they too saw the potential for growth and removed the limitations of the $5 per order, but the seller’s work ethic improved in providing professional services for serious projects and larger amounts of money per order. This is still the cheapest option available at the time of writing this article. Now they offer Fiverr Pro with only qualified sellers known to deliver professional standards.
I will expand this article with more details in the future, but this is enough information to get you started for now.
If you have reached this part of the article, it shows that you too have attached your mind to the potential a website can give to your idea.
