There was a time when makeup was used by most people in the industry to protect their skins from the damage that high-intensity lights were assumed to cause during photoshoots. Even in that era, normal locals like ourselves would apply make-up but in moderation. However, now when I look around and see people bombarding and layering their skins with tons of different chemical products, it just seems unfair and unreal to me.
Not that I have something against people who wear makeup, or produce it, it’s just that while following the bandwagon most of us have forgotten why really makeup was created. It was introduced so that people who had some sort of deformity on their face could hide it using makeup. It was made so that people could change their demeanor in a way that made them feel better. What it was never meant for or created for was cultivating insecurities in our generation about the way they looked.
It’s alarming, and we all need to realize the urgency of the matter. Anything in excess backfires, so does overdone makeup. Great amount of money, time and attention goes avoiding the reality and embracing a nonexistent unrealistic self-image which has no grounds in the real world.
With every passing day a new product range is introduced, to make your skin glow like a north star. To make it look radiant, and evergreen, to give you the perfect finished ‘no makeup’ look. Is the industry telling us that we even need makeup for no makeup look because our naturally glowing faces just aren’t acceptable, or are we doing it to ourselves through our ego and curiosity, not knowing what we want? Aware or not, we’re progressively hiding one of the most valuable things of all things, our originality. Where exactly are we leading ourself, both physically and psychologically?
Due to the negative social comparisons, and unrealistic beauty standards set by the aggressive competitiveness in the industry and further enforced by different media platforms, this generation is facing some of the worst unnecesary mental crisis. None of the people seem to be happy with how they really look without literally covering their faces in layers of foundations, concealers, and god knows what not! There are zero self-acceptance and zero self-love. Aging women are denying that they are aging, while younglings are trying Kylie lip kits on YouTube channels while boasting about how hard it was for them to get their hands on the “limited edition” packaging! I mean are you for real? You are a 12-year-old, you don’t need to know what Kylie lip kits are! Instead, you are better off knowing how much mica goes into making those shiny eye shades you very happily wear, while the child laborers who extract them are suffering from chronic lung diseases.
Relatively fast the consumer of beauty and skin care products is moving towards the naturally made organic high quality cosmetics, so will do the leading industry and it’s just a matter of time for the competition to turn into who makes the best natural product to make a sale.
Regardless organic or not, makeup is good if used in moderation. Use it to make yourself feel better, but do not make it your habit. It’s a luxury, not a necessity.
